GENERAL ELECTIONS 2022: ANNOUNCEMENT AND OPTION TO VOTE IN ITALY

With the decree of the President of the Republic n. 96 of 21 July 2022, the President of the Republic dissolved the Parliament. With D.P.R. n. 97 of the same day, the elections of the Camera dei Deputati and the Senato della Repubblica have been scheduled on the 25th of September 2022. Citizens residing abroad will vote for candidates from the Foreign Constituency.

According to Law no. 459 of December 27, 2001, Italian citizens living abroad registered in the electoral roll of the Foreign Constituency will vote by mail, receiving the electoral envelope at their home address. For this purpose, it is therefore recommended to check and update your personal and address information at your Consulate, preferably using the online portal of consular services Fast It.

As an alternative to voting by correspondence, citizens registered to AIRE can CHOOSE TO VOTE IN ITALY AT THEIR OWN MUNICIPALITY, communicating in writing their choice (OPTION) to the Consulate BY JULY 31, 2022 (on the 10th day following the announcement of elections). This communication can be written on simple paper and – in order to be valid – must contain the name, surname, date, place of birth, place of residence and signature of the voter and must be accompanied by a copy of the declarant’s identity document. For this communication you can also use the appropriate form downloadable on this website page (up on the right).

Voters who choose to vote in Italy at the next general elections will receive from their respective Italian municipalities the notice-card to vote – at the polling stations in Italy – for candidates in the national constituencies and not for those of the Foreign Constituency.

The choice (option) to vote in Italy is only valid for one election.

It is reiterated, in any case, that the option MUST REACH the consular office NO LATER THAN 10 DAYS AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELECTIONS. As required by current legislation, it will be the responsibility of the voters to verify that the option notice sent by mail has been received in time by their Consular Office.

The choice to vote in Italy can be subsequently REVOKED with a written communication to be sent or delivered to the Consular Office with the same modalities and within the same terms provided for the exercise of the option. If you choose to return to Italy to vote, the Law does NOT provide for any type of refund for travel expenses incurred, but only discounts within the Italian territory. Only voters resident in countries where there are no conditions for voting by mail (Law 459/2001, Art. 20, paragraph 1-bis) are entitled to a refund of 75% of the cost of the travel ticket, in economy class.

The Consular Office is available for any further clarification.
