The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), together with South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), opens today May 19 the 32nd Session of the Governing Council, bringing together representatives from 69 Member States to promote a shared vision: leveraging biotechnology as a transformative force for sustainable development in Africa.

At the heart of this year’s session is a strong reaffirmation of the commitment of ICGEB’s founding host governments—Italy and India, together with South Africa—whose longstanding collaboration continues to promote scientific excellence, international cooperation, and tangible impact across the continent.

The Italian delegation is led by Deputy Director General/Central Director for Scientific, Space, and Sports Diplomacy, Minister Plenipotentiary Lamberto Maria Moruzzi

On the sidelines of the proceedings, Minister Plenipotentiary Lamberto Moruzzi also met at the Italian Consulate in Cape Town with a delegation of Italian researchers active in South Africa, representing the Italian scientific network in the country and coming in particular from the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. The meeting facilitated an exchange of views on the main areas of scientific cooperation between Italy and South Africa, with a particular focus on biotechnology, health, innovation, and the strengthening of international research networks.
