The Italian Embassy in Pretoria and the South African Department of Science and Technology, with further contributions from the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy, INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) and SARAO (South African Radio Astronomical Observatory) are organizing the workshop \u201cEnhancing the collaboration in radio-astronomy between Italy and South Africa\u201d to be held in Pretoria the 24th and 25th October 2018.<\/p>\n

Radio astronomy is a key area of investment in Italy and South Africa. The ongoing developments in technology and computing capacity are anticipating a major expansion of our knowledge in radio astrophysics and opening new opportunities for industrial cooperation. Italy and South Africa have a longstanding tradition of collaboration in all these areas, and the aim of the workshop is to further strengthen and expand the existing successful collaborations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The meeting will focus on four key areas:<\/p>\n

– SKA and Very Long Baseline Interferometry operations: African VLBI Network<\/p>\n

and Italian VLBI Network, VLBI with MeerKAT<\/p>\n

– SKA challenges: Big data and cloud computing; big data and data analytics;<\/p>\n

artificial intelligence for astronomy<\/p>\n

– The added value of industrial partnership<\/p>\n

– Joint human capital development initiatives in radio astronomy.<\/p>\n
