Webinar on “Social, Psychological and Health Impact of COVID-19 on the Elderly”

On July 7th 2020, thanks to the collaboration between the Embassy of Italy and the Academy of Science of South Africa , Italian and South African experts will discuss the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the most affected and vulnerable group- the elderly population- during the webinar “Social, Psychological and Health Impact of COVID-19 on the Elderly: South African and Italian Perspectives”.

In addition to the aspects of public health, experts will examine the severe psychological and social consequences/effects that have been reported and analyzed, and that will be very useful in light of preventative measures and damage control.

The Italian experts sharing their professional experience in the field of SARS-CoV-2 are: Prof. Emanuele Nicastri , Chief Scientist of the infectious diseases department at The Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases, who treated the first 3 Covid-19 patients in Italy in January 2020; and Prof. Fabrizia Lattanzio, geriatrician and Chief Scientist at the Italian National Centre on Health and Science on Aging (INRCA),who launched and followed the project “ReportAge COVID – Clinical and biological predictors of COVID-19 disease in older patients”.

The discussion will be moderated by the Executive Deputy Director of the Human Scienze Research Council, Prof. Priscilla Reddy, and the South African experts who will take part in the discussion are Prof. Ashraf Kagee from Stellenbosch University and Prof. Margie Schneider, from the University of Cape Town.
