ITALIAN FESTIVAL 2005 - Programme of events

The Italian Festival 2005, an initiative organised by the Embassy of Italy, promises to delight, entertain and educate the public about the rich and varied heritage and culture of Italy – all with the magical touch of passion one expects from Italy.
This year’s Italian Festival comprises a wide-ranging line-up and includes the following activities and events:  

Fiat Motor Show, incorporating the launch of the new Fiat Panda 4x4 on 22 May 2005 at Gerotek Testing Facility (invitations only)  

Art exhibition of the work of renowned Italian painter – Domenico Purificatofrom 2-26 June 2005 at the Pretoria Art Museum in the Henri Preiss Hall  
The Italian Embassy proudly presents the work of late Italian Neo-Realist artist Domenico Purificato at the Pretoria Art Museum. Contact the Pretoria Art Museum on  (012) 344 1807.
Museum hours are as follows: Tue-Sun 10:00-17:00; Wed 10:00-20:00; closed on Mondays and Public Holidays  

Opera Concert with artists from the Foundation Arena di Verona  

  • 3 June 2005 at 18:30: Baxter Theatre in Cape Town with the South African College of Music Choir (Admission free of charge)
  • 5 June 2005 at 18:30: Aula, University of Pretoria with the Chamber Orchestra of Pretoria (Admission free of charge)

Opera pieces to be performed include: Verdi’s Nabucco and La Traviata, Puccini’s Tosca and Madame Butterfly, Giordano’s Andrea Chenier and Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana.

Italian movie festival at Cinema Nouveau Theatres (Ster Kinekor)  

  • 3-9 June 2005: Cinema Nouveau Rosebank in Johannesburg
  • 17-19 June 2005: Cinema Nouveau Cavendish Square in Cape Town
  • 1-3 July: Cinema Nouveau Gateway in Durban  

Admission is free of charge on the normal cinema viewing times  

Italian Expo on Nelson Mandela Square from 14-19 June 2005  on the theme "ITALIAN TECHNOLOGY AT WORK"  
The Italian Trade Commission, in collaboration with the Italian-South African Chamber of Trade and Industries, will be hosting a Trade Fair which is to be held at the Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton City, from 14 to 19 June 2005. The Expo opens daily at 09:00.  
The theme of this prestigious event is “Italian technology at work” and the prime aim of the Fair will be to promote the quality, innovation and highest levels of precision and performance of Italian machinery, made in Italy, by Italian companies.
The official opening will be presided over by the Ambassador of Italy, His Excellency Valerio Astraldi on 14 June 2005 at 10:30 on Nelson Mandela Square.  Other Italian dignitaries present at the opening of the Italian Expo 2005 will be Dr Vittorio Sandalli (General Consul of Italy), Dr Gianpaolo Bruno (Italian Trade Commissioner) and Mr Gianni Ravazzotti (President of the Italian-South African Chamber of Trade and Industries).  
The Fair will showcase exhibitors from Italian companies as well as the participation of local companies which distribute Italian machinery or manufacture by utilising Italian machinery.   Industrial technology and design exhibitors at the Italian Expo 2005 include:   Ferrari, Fiat, Comau, Pirelli Tyres, BLM, Group Rosss, Ducati System, Sacmi, Ottone Meloda, Breton S.p.a., Zucchetti, Gaggia by Nexus
The Expo will also include a fashion show of accessories by Luxottica and Prada.
